Originality

by Jim Jarmusch

Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows.

Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul.

If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don't bother concealing your thievery - celebrate it if you feel like it.

In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said:

"It's not where you take things from - it's where you take them to."

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the things you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

—Mark Twain

You don't have time to convince everybody to like you. Your time is too great to fight battles that don't matter. If someone doesn't praise you, they don't matter. If someone leaves you, you didn't need them. I love loyal people, I love the ones that I know will accept me through every decision I make. When you realize that you can't please everybody, you're going to see new seasons of growth, new opportunities, and God will take you to new places that you've never even dreamed of. Your destiny is too great to be wasted on other people who won't accept you.
